Update! Desk Spaces Now Available At Chapel Studios

Paul Silver, stalwart of the Brighton Farm Freelancers group, has correctly pointed out that I've neglected this site, so I'm sorry and, by way of an apology, a quick update:

We now have desk spaces available for Freelancers and small businesses, primarily in the Creative Industries - to foster commercial collaboration and co-working.

Do come and have a look around! Call me on 07585 008256 to arrange a viewing.

Chapel Studios is a light and airy open plan office in the mews (just along from Choccy Woccy Doodah :) at the bottom of Waterloo Street (opposite the Iron Duke), 200m from the sea, right on the Brighton & Hove border.

Flexible, fully-inclusive (see this page for «What You Get») prices on industry-standard licence agreement.

We've been open since 2006, and I haven't had to promote the place as we've been full with long term tenants, but naturally they move on to bigger, dedicated offices as their businesses grow.

This Blog Now Obsolete - Please Refer to DU - http://digitalunited.co.uk

Preserving this blog for posterity now.

Digital United is based at Chapel Studios, together with a great community of media professionals and a couple of folk running their own businesses. We still have a couple of spaces in the studio and so the best way to find out availability is to email me direct: r a l f (@) digitalunited.co.uk or to use the contact function on the DU site here: http://digitalunited.co.uk/contact.html

Digital United has had a fantastic opening three quarters of trading which began with Creative and Strategic Consultancy for Dorling Kindersley (DK), took us through operations in the Video Games & Entertainment sectors, before landing us in the Film Industry, where we are very content indeed.

A post summarising the above can be found here.

Stop working by yourself. Stay working for yourself.

The Web Co-operative is a network of self-employed digital talents. We share office space  and also ideas and contacts. You'll find us at Chapel Studios, tucked away between Western Road and the Seafront, and at the moment we're recruiting.

Why the Web Co-operative beats staying home

It means never having to watch Jeremy Kyle. It means not having to explain why you're home to the postman. It could even mean eating less toast. Taking a desk with us you'll avoid certain distractions and you could even free up some space.

Why the Web Co-operative beats sitting in your favourite cafe

There may be plenty of choice at your local Megabucks Coffee Emporium, but at Chapel Studios hot drinks are 100% free of charge. We've great coffee and it's on tap 24/7. The financial savings on your caffeine habit could soon add up.

Why the Web Co-operative beats going to the beach*

We can't offer pebbles, but we can offer networking opportunities. Our business is run on co-operative lines, giving you access to a whole roomful of web specialists who you may come to know and love. And, of course, we have Wi-Fi too.

So why not book your place in a unique collaborative working space? Get in touch and find out more. Email hello@chapelstudiosbrighton.com

Co-working in action

Ok, so maybe this isn't quite as dynamic as the title suggests but it still illustrates a point. Three people that met at Chapel Studios are now working as a tight unit on all sorts of exciting projects like all the applications / widgets and the funky design you see on www.artreview.com.John Watson of JWA Communications, project managed, while Nick Tong of Talk Web Solutions directed all the techie stuff and Bruno Rios Pereira of Bright Red Design produced application and web visuals.

Quote to remember

Picked out by Adriana over on mediainfluencer.net:

The openness of the Internet is what made Google — and Yahoo! — possible. A good idea that users find useful spreads quickly. Businesses can be created around the idea. Users benefit from constant innovation. It's what makes the Internet such an exciting place.

Is Chapel Studios a business incubator? If so, methinks this is a good thing

Wikipedia defines Business Incubators as «organizations that support the entrepreneurial process,» helping to increase survival rates for innovative startup companies. Entrepreneurs with feasible projects are selected and admitted into the incubators, where they are offered a specialised menu of support resources and services. Resources and services open to an entrepreneur might include such diverse elements as

  • provision of physical space (offices, labs
  • management coaching
  • help in preparing an effective business plan
  • administrative services
  • technical support
  • business networking
  • advice on intellectual property and
  • help in finding sources of financing

We are obviously not so rigorous or tied to specific Venture Capitalists, City speciliasts or investment funds, but we do know such people and are able to work with them objectively and on your behalf if you have a serious patentable invention constituting the best form of IP with ROI for licensing.

Our speciality as an incubator is within the creative industries, particularly focused on London, Brighton and the South East, with a clear goal of preventing the mass migration of talent from Brighton everyday.

As an incubator of sorts, able to provide the services listed above, we have noticed some incidental incubation going on alongside incidental collaboration. We haven't set out to provide these services, it has just so happened that we have a highly experienced management coach in-house and other members of the community have relevant experience in the areas listed which, in the spirit of openness and collaboration, they are happy to share. It's all good at Chapel Studios.

In-chair workouts courtesy of Mark from Integration Training

On the recommendation of Tom Hume of Future Platforms, Mark got in touch to see if we'd be interested in a stretch & relaxation taster session. We were, he visited this afternoon, everybody got involved and we were all very impressed with Mark's focused ABC approach to maintaining fitness (well, preventing tension, stretching out muscles and learning how not to succumb to the pitfalls of working in front of a computer all day) and relaxation whilst up against deadlines.

After the group session, where we all went through some exercises, Mark was kind enough to offer one on one tips to adjust our own ergonomics.

I'm sure we'll have Mark back on a regular basis and thoroughly recommend his work. Photos to follow...and here they are :)
